A DIFFERENT KIND OF THERAPY

Your mind knows far more than you realize.

Hypnotherapy helps you access the deeper parts of yourself — the ones that hold patterns, beliefs, and old stories — so your mind can tap into the parts of your self that can help you soar.

WHAT IT ACTUALLY IS

So, what is hypnotherapy?

Let's clear something up right away: clinical hypnotherapy has nothing to do with you doing embarrassing things, me waving some thrift store trinket in your face, or making you talk about things you don’t want to talk about. Notice every time I’ve written it I write hypnotherapy, not “hypnosis.” What it is is a well-researched, evidence-based therapy approach to helping people get better — and it might be one of the most underused ones humans have for getting better.

Here in the office, I’ll help you enter a state that’s a lot like when your body is getting heavy as you drift off to sleep (that’s where the “you’re getting sleepy…” talk comes in, which I don’t use). In this calm, open mental space (to use some lingo, dissociated), we’ll cooperate with your mind gently work with the thoughts, patterns, and energy that’s held in your body that just talking about it can’t quite touch. That’s a superpower to hone, which we all have built in.

HOW IT WORKS

The science behind the chill

Hypnotherapy is recognized by all the Big Name medical groups as a legitimate therapeutic intervention. Research shows it can create measurable changes in brain activity — helping to quiet the overactive stress response and making the mind more flexible and open to new patterns of thinking. It’s actually commonly used for surgical anesthesia, labor, and dental procedures-no actual medicine whatsoever.

One very practical scientific finding that people seem to love experiencing is that the “mind wandering” system of the brain shuts down, thus folks experience a super narrowed focus during hypnotherapy (like focusing on the suggestions we’ve agreed I’ll be giving) and nothing else.

SETTING THE RECORD STRAIGHT

Common myths, busted

MYTH

"You'll lose control."

You're aware and in control the entire time. You can speak, move, and come out of the relaxed state whenever you choose. Hypnotherapy is collaborative — never something done to you. If something doesn’t sit right with you, say me suggesting you notice how comfortable the temperature is in the office, when it’s actually quite cold for you, your brain would clearly register that that wasn’t true and push back inside. You may or may not mention that to me, but you certainly wouldn’t leave falsely believing the office was comfortably warm.

MYTH

"Not everyone can experience hypnotherapy."

Simply not true. However, if there’s some sort of deep-seated reason why someone in fact doesn’t want to experience hypnotherapy, we’ll move on to another way for me to help. Again, you’re in control, and we’re not going to engage in a push-pull that your mind might not be on board for.

MYTH

"It's a quick and easy fix for [changing certain behavior]."

Well, that’s true…for some moreso than others. For instance, quitting smoking is a real tricky one that takes some time. Let’s talk through what you’d like to change early on.

MYTH

"It's not real therapy."

Anything that’s research-based, grounded in ethics and solid science, like hypnotherapy is, is “real therapy.” Bye.
